Alternative Education - Farming for Teens at Knights Care Farm

Farming for Students is a day service offered to young people (10-18)  requiring full time education. Our service supports individuals in Land based learning to learn away from the conventional classroom environment. We have a proven record working with students from local secondary schools, supporting their learning and providing an alternative outlet and improve learning outcomes.

Land based Alternative Education is an alternative to a classroom education. A formal school classroom doesn't always suit everyone and we know some young people have the skills and ability to succeed beyond traditional pens and paper. Our land based education is an Alternative Education Provision, providing land-based and environmental study programmes to enable students to achieve & apply what they learn in activities they enjoy.

What can be gained from coming to the farm?

Everyone at Knights Farm plays an important part of a team.  Farming aids in learning confidence, social skills as well as being on time and being polite to people. Skills such as animal welfare, communication and team work are all part of an average day. Using practical examples we assist students to improve maths, english and other curriculum based skills.

Many students who come to us have lost confidence in their ability. Often they have shut them selves off to education convincing themselves they cannot do it.  Our team works hard to rebuild self esteem, confidence and belief to reopen the doors to learning.

A Year of Activities

Many of the activities at Knights Care Farm are seasonal. All our regular farmers get to see how a traditional farm runs.  From lambing in the Spring, shearing in the Summer, harvest in to the Autumn and preparation of fire wood to keep homes warm at Winter.     Take a look at a year on the farm here     ....

This is a great way to get in to farming, join Young farmers Social groups and experience agriculture.

We teach agricultural skills and enable individuals to enjoy being part of a commercial working farm. Students can learn to apply what they are taught at school to a practical application in the workplace.

We can design plans individual to each student and support them to carry out many activities such as growing fruit & vegetables, gardening, animal management, land management, mechanical maintenance, woodwork and more.

Knights Care Farm assists adolescents age 10 +, enabling them to enjoy the outdoors, whilst learning valuable skills.  We offer this alternative method of education to those who may be disengaging or may have fallen out of mainstream education and those who just need something different.

Knights Farm alternative education farming in Devon is rewarding to all our students. Everyone loves to get involved caring for our livestock.  Depending on ability there is the chance to be involved in up to the equivalent a-level standard Animal care, farm management & horticulture.  During lambing season at Knights Farm we teach all elements of lambing, some will get hands on with birthing and others have one to one contact bottle feeding orphan lambs.

Our alternative farming provision is developing all the time, all who come here are part of a valuable team helping the farm to run.  It is a really healthy environment for anyone who loves animals and the outdoors. We are now working with many of the local primary, secondary schools & colleges in the area. We also work with Home educators,  SEN teams, O-25 team, inclusion team and young offenders.
