Land based Respite & Day Care

Care Farming - social care incorporating
land based activities in East Devon

Care Farming is a day-care service offered to individuals with a range of disabilities or social needs. We teach agricultural skills and enable individuals to enjoy being part of a working farm. We have care plans individually designed to each client and support them to carry out many activities such as growing fruit & vegetables, gardening, and working with the livestock.

Care farming in Devon is rewarding to all our clients. Everyone loves to get involved caring for our livestock. We are based on a commercial farm with over 200 ewes, 60 head of cattle and pigs; depending on ability there is the chance to be involved in herding, mucking out, and feeding. During lambing season, all help in even the simplest of ways. Occasionally, some will even have one to one contact bottle feeding orphan lambs. Our Care farm is developing all the time, all who come here are part of a team helping the farm to run.  It is a really healthy environment for anyone who loves animals and the outdoors.

What can be gained from care farming?

Everyone at Knights Care Farm plays an important part of the team. Care Farming aids in learning confidence, social skills as well as the small things like being on time and being polite to people. Skills such as animal welfare, communication and team work are all part of an average day.

How is the day structured?

Once everyone has arrived and protective clothing is on, we start with the daily activities and then mid-morning we usually enjoy a hot drink and snack.  We then have a variety of activities to choose from, some go to do horticulture and some prefer working with livestock or maintenance such as fencing! Everyone brings a packed lunch and we all stop to meet up and talk about the days efforts. In the afternoon there is more choice of jobs and then the day is drawn to a close by feeding the animals.

We are very flexible to each individual's requirements. Our services are adjusted to fit around individuals needs.

What do we do when it rains?

Care Farming is sometimes limited by weather so we have many varied activities we enjoy doing with our clients. We have designated recreational areas set up for wood work, horticulture,  art & crafts and other fun tasks. Seasonally we enjoy tasks adapted to the weather.

Farming is not a fair weather job, we do work all year round in all weather conditions so we do ask everyone to come prepared with correct clothing.  We still require  water proof trousers even on sunny days if we are working with livestock.

Many of the activities at Knights Care Farm are seasonal. All our regular care farmers get to see how a traditional farm runs.  Experience East Devon at its best, from lambing in the Spring, to calving in the Autumn.  We do horticulture, shearing and harvest in the Summer, even preparation of fire wood to keep homes warm in winter.
